The main concern with sodium content has to do with it’s effects on blood pressure and heart disease. This is an interesting topic because so often the complete equation is misunderstood in main-stream culture.

The real issue with sodium, in relation to blood pressure, is the amount found in most processed foods. Reason being, most processed foods are usually devoid of sodium’s important counterpart- potassium.

In whole foods, there is a naturally healthy ratio of the two components (sodium and potassium) and both are necessary for cell functionality. The sodium-potassium pump in our cells is essentially the battery of our bodies and responsible for everything from transmitting signals between nerves, helping the kidneys to function properly, maintaining energy production and fluid balance and also assisting in bone health.
